Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such medications must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
