The artist has given the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound award cash to the MVT, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's independent music venues.

Fender was presented with the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"I would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated Sam Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

He also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous small stages across Britain.

These funds assisted spaces that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges caused by floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted funding support in improving amenities and gear that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from shows in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

In the band won the prize in 1996 for their record the album, lead singer Cocker declared that the band would donate their prize money to the organization the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her prize among several organizations, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite told a publication.

Two years ago, they gave their winnings to the youth organization that supported their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally winners that year they donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," stated artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory affected another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in the city were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by a national body and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
